Wren Hanks

The Army of Skeleton Pets Regards Itself

A bird licks up blood
Kittens sizzle without skin veins peel from empty ribs
like wet spaghetti

Chinchilla's pelt drops like heated butter
Tarantula eats her cracked abdomen like afterbirth

looking out at her shell through eight ivy eyes
she's pale as if powdered with sugar

Rabbit's sclerae pour down her face

She's bone-silver now
eyes that aren't eyes floating outside her sockets
swirling and pulling in ash
