Enjoy Being Human

Keith Welch

Chrysalis

I love to watch buildings demolished.
A collapse can be a creative event—
a cathartic cleaning of the canvas.
I myself never achieved anything
that didn't first fall to pieces.
When I finally crack I hope the whole
damn house comes crashing down
around me, every splintered bit
of history falling in glittering
shards over my squashed and blasted corpus.
When you come searching for survivors,
you'll find me waiting under the rubble
for an eager rescue dog to sniff out
something there that might have survived;
a new thing, beautiful, and passing strange.
