Connor Thorpe
There Were Always Fat Goldfish
there were always fat goldfish
in the pond out back
you could scoop them up if you were quick
juggle them from palm to palm
and watch their relief as they plunged
back into the water
there were dozens of them
before they began to turn onto their backs
and float upwards
gray and orange buoys collecting algae
the one who had survived upside down
for two whole years went last
outlived the rest of them that way
left with nobody to watch him
turn right side up
